Itongadol.- One man was lightly injured after his car was fired upon by unknown assailants in the northern West Bank Sunday.
The victim, an Israeli resident of the West Bank, had his car overtaken near the Jit junction by gunmen who shot at him, wounding him in his hand.
He managed to escape to the nearby Jewish settlement of Kedumim where he received medical treatment. He was evacuated to the Meir hospital in Kfar Saba for further treatment.
The suspect car was seen continuing on to areas under the control of the Palestinian Authority, Israel Radio reported. The assailants are still at large, and the IDF has opened an investigation into the matter.
The attack comes amid a rash of violent incidents on West Bank roads.
Late Saturday night, a soldier was hit by a car and lightly injured near Hebron in a suspected terror attack.
Yossi Dagan, the head of the Samaria Regional Council, said he held the government responsible for the Jit attack, accusing Jerusalem of “tying the IDF’s hands and preventing it from defending [Israeli] civilians.”
In a statement, he claimed that the attacks took place at a location where the army used to maintain a roadblock.
The attack took place two months after two separate shootings in the West Bank by Palestinian gunmen that left Israeli students Malachy Rosenfeld, 25, and Danny Gonen, 25, dead.
Gonen, from Lod, and a friend of his were driving in the West Bank when they were flagged down by a Palestinian man who was seemingly asking them for assistance. He then pulled a gun out of a bag he was carrying and opened fire at point-blank range, mortally wounding Gonen and wounding his friend.
Rosenfeld, from Kochav Hashachar, was killed in a drive-by shooting on his way home from a basketball game near the West Bank settlement of Shvut Rachel, north of Ramallah, at the end of June. Three other people were wounded in the attack.
The Jit Junction area has been the scene of attacks in the past.
On March 4, assailants shot at an IDF jeep at the crossroads. Nobody was injured in that attack.
On April 30, 2013, Tulkarem native Samal Zagal stabbed and killed 32-year-old father of five Evyatar Borowsky while he was waiting for a ride at the Tapuah Junction just south of Jit.
In December last year, three Palestinians were arrested for a hit-and-run that left a man seriously injured at the nearby Alon junction.
