A severe security breach has taken place in an IDF base in northern Israel Friday, as several masked men were able to enter the base, overpower several soldiers and steal their weapons before fleeing the area.
Security forces are canvassing the area for the suspects. The Military Police have launched an investigation and suspect the thieves might have had inside help.
According to available details, the breach took place in the early hours of Friday morning at the Naftali Base, near the Golani Junction.
The men were apparently able to breach the base in close proximity to its weapons repository, overpower the soldier guarding it, tie him up and steal his weapon, as well as the weapons of three other soldiers.
Friday\’s incident follows several others in which thieves were able to breach IDF bases.
Military bases in Israel are constantly plagued by metal thieves, as well as by thieves who are after equipment and weapons.
In an effort to tackle such incidents, the IDF has invested NIS 7 million (roughly $1.8 million) in a new surveillance system, which is being installed in bases across Israel.
The system includes both peripheral and on-site detection measures.
