“The Mumbai attacks will long be remembered as one of the most infamous terrorist outrages,” said Robert G. Sugarman, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “Unfortunately, this conviction and sentencing does not mean that the threat from Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group behind the attacks, has ended.  The group continues to issue threats against Westerners, Jews, Israelis and Indians. There remain unresolved questions concerning those who planned and directed the attack.”

Kasab was one of a group of 10 men affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LET), a Pakistani-based terrorist organization who terrorized the city of Mumbai over three days, attacking hotels, restaurants, the central train station and the Mumbai Chabad House.

The attackers killed 160 people, six of them in the Chabad house, including Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, and his wife, Rivka.  Kasab reportedly told Indian authorities that the Chabad House and Israelis were specifically targeted.

At least one American citizen helped plan the Mumbai attacks and target Jews and Israelis in India.  David Coleman Headley, an American citizen of Pakistani descent, conducted extensive surveillance of the locations targeted in the attack, including the Chabad House.

More information on the individuals and terrorist groups responsible for the Mumbai massacre is available on the League’s Terrorism web page at www.adl.org/terrorism. The League’s resources include:
