Liberman: MK pay cut change a ‘mistake’

Itongadol.- Lawmakers made a grave mistake in voting against lowering their own salaries by 10 percent, Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Avigdor Liberman said on Sunday.
He spoke three days after the Knesset Labor, Welfare and Health Committee voted to reduce their pay cut, which Liberman proposed, from 10% to 1%. “I find the decision unfortunate,” he said. “Personal example is very important, and it is no coincidence that officers in the IDF use the slogan ‘Follow me.’”
Liberman called the decision “a mistake in both substance and in the way the public will view it.”
The Movement for Quality Government said that “in a time of budget cuts that are painful for the entire Israeli public, elected officials should agree to lower their salaries in order to decrease the public expense.” The NGO also called for unessential ministries to be cut, saying they “steal resources from the public.”
The Labor panel also delayed a raise for unionized government workers that was to go into effect this month.
