Itongadol.- Israel\’s Security Agency (Shin Bet) said they arrested a man accused of throwing a stun grenade at a Hesder yeshiva in the city of Jaffa earlier this month.
Details of the investigation were under a gag order until Israel\’s military censor released the findings of the investigation for the first time Thursday, stating they had arrested the suspect on September 8.
Hafez Cundus, an Arab resident of Jaffa who served a 28-year prison sentence before being released in 2012, admitted during interrogation on September 1 to throwing the explosive device at the school, which is specifically designated for religious-Zionist youth that combines yeshiva study along with IDF preparation courses.
According to Shin Bet, Cundus said that the goal of the attack was "to frighten the settlers" learning at the yeshiva and to get them to "sit quietly."
The Shin Bet went on to say that Cundus\’ actions were an expression of hostility "against the Judaization of Jaffa," a term used by local Arabs unhappy over what they say is the deliberate attempt by religious Zionists to change the demographic balance in the city, thus diluting the Arab presence there.
The Tel Aviv-Jaffa District Attorney\’s Office said Thursday that they have indicted Cundus on hate crime charges as well as the use of a deadly weapon.
