Itongadol.- Palestinian assailants in the West Bank threw a pipe bomb toward IDF forces carrying out an arrest early Tuesday near the Kalandiya checkpoint, a military spokeswoman confirmed.
A Duvdevan unit entered Kalandiya early on Tuesday and arrested a wanted security suspect. On its way out, the unit was attacked by Palestinians, one of whom hurled an explosive at soldiers. Soldiers returned fire, striking the Palestinian who hurled the bomb.
The attacker was hit and killed in the return fire.
The IDF has launched an investigation into the unit. No IDF forces were injured and an investigation into the incident was opened.
Security forces remained in the area to prevent further outbreaks of violence.
The Duvdevan elite undercover unit has taken a lead role in counter-terrorism raids in the West Bank due to its expertise in making such arrests.
The flashpoint Kalandiya area between Jerusalem and Ramallah is known as a hotbed for violence and has seen frequent protests and demonstrations between Israeli security forces and Palestinians.
Earlier on Tuesday, the IDF arrested seven security suspects across the West Bank. Six were arrested on suspicion of taking part in rioting and attacks on civilians and security forces. Arrests were made in Nablus, Kalandia, Azriya, which is southeast of Bethlhem, and in Hebron, where three suspects were arrested. The suspects have been taken for questioning.
