Report: Peru arrested Hezbollah operative planning attacks on Israelis, Jews

Itongadol.- Police in Lima previous confirmed arrest of man that they suspected of having links to an unnamed "international terrorist organization."

Authorities in Peru have reportedly arrested a Hezbollah member who was allegedly planning to carry out attacks against Israeli and Jewish targets in the South American country, Channel 2 reported Thursday night.

According to the report, the arrest was made after intelligence information identified targets associated with Israelis and Jews in Peru, including areas popular with Israeli backpackers, the Israeli Embassy in Lima and Jewish community institutions.

On Wednesday, Peru said police in Lima arrested a man that they suspected of having links to an unnamed "international terrorist organization" and found traces of explosives in the home where he was captured.

Peruvian anti-terrorism agents were trying to determine the man\’s identity, nationality and whether he may be carrying out illegal activities in the country, the Interior Ministry said in a statement late published on Tuesday.

Preliminary intelligence operations uncovered evidence of military-grade explosive materials where he was arrested, according to the statement.

The ministry did not initially say why it suspected the man was linked to an international criminal organization. It did not immediately respond to requests for additional information.
