Itongadol.- After weeks of controversy surrounding Gal Hirsch, who was allotted to become Israel\’s new police chief, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan seem to have chosen a new candidate – a deputy Shen Bet chief who has yet to be identified publically by name.

It is known however, that the candidate is religious and lives over the green line in the West Bank, a reality that could stir some controversy.

If his candidacy moves forward, the head of the Shin Bet, Yoram Cohen, will be replaced by his third in command in May, 2016 unless his appointment is renewed.

Hirsch is a former IDF general whose business dealings and conduct during the Second Lebanon War drew severe criticism from some politicians and members of the public.

Erdan cancelled Hirsch\’s candidacy on Wednesday after Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein informed the public security minister that he would not support his choice of candidate.
