US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to discuss bilateral and regional issues, including the situation in Honduras and in Venezuela and Colombia, when she meets today with Argentine Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman.
"We will take note of the situation regarding the promotion of democracy in the region, the situation regarding I londuras, but also I am sure that they will take note about the conversation today by president (of Venezuela Ilugo) Chávez and Colombian president (Juan Manuel) Santos," the spokesman of the US State Department, Philip Crowley, said in his daily press briefing.
Crowley added that both officials could also discuss the Iran issue.
Argentina has sought without result the arrest of high-ranking Iranian government officials, accusing them of masterminding the attack on the AMIA Jewish centre in which 85 people were killed in 1994. Teheran rejects the allegations.
Timerman yesterday met with Michael Froman, the US deputy national security advisor for international economic affairs, and said Argentina favoured the reform of multilateral lending agencies, according to an Argentine Foreign Ministry press release. Timerman said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should not "act like an agent that disciplines in the name of the markets." Timerman also met with Dan Restrepo, the US National Security Council’s top official for Western Hemisphere affairs. Timerman told Restrepo that "Latin America" must "solve its problems independently." He added Argentina in Latin America had always sought the "resolution of conflicts." Buenos Aires Herald
