British Consul forced to evacuate Bir Zeit

Itongadol.- The British Consul-General Sir Vincent Fean was forced to leave Bir Zeit University near Ramallah amid student protests on Tuesday the Communications Manager for the British Consul confirmed.
The consul-general was at the university to discuss the UK\’s foreign policy in the Middle East and to meet with its head, Dr Khalil al-Hindi. "His intention had been to engage in an open dialogue with the student community about the UK’s policies in the Middle East," the British Consul reported.
The Communications Manager confirmed that the neither Consul nor his staff were injured but damage was caused to the side mirror of his vehicle.
Shouting, "Get out of Bir Zeit!" dozens of students attacked the top British diplomat\’s car as it left the campus.
"Sir Vincent had hoped to underline Britain’s deep commitment to the creation of a Palestinian state, and the urgency of progress on the peace process in 2013," the Consul stated, and adding “Sadly, such a dialogue was not possible on this occasion."
When students learned of the consul-general\’s presence on campus, they staged a protest outside the offices of the university administration, chanting nationalistic songs and anti-British slogans.
Shouting, "Get out of Bir Zeit!" dozens of students attacked the top British diplomat\’s car as it left the campus.
The consul-general was forced to cut short his visit and leave the campus immediately.
In 2000, Palestinian students at Bir Zeit University attacked visiting French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, hurling stones at him and his entourage.
