Argentina’s Jewish umbrella organization, DAIA, has won a court injunction against the mammoth Internet Google search engine.
The order prevents Google from “suggesting” surfers visit certain anti-Semitic websites – including those that promote Holocaust denial.
A Buenos Aires judge has ruled that Google must remove the “suggested searches” which guide Internet users to such websites.
The sites are considered illegal under Argentinean law because they incite to violence against people, and/or propagate racist and anti-Semitic libels.
The judge also ordered Google not to place advertisements on such websites.
A total of 76 sites were listed that openly promoted discrimination, according to DAIA, which federates the Jewish communities of Argentina.
“The successful court action was made possible by the work of the Observatorio WEB, a joint operation by DAIA, the Latin American Jewish Congress (the World Jewish Congress regional affiliate) and AMIA,” the group said in a statement.
