A truck driver on Sunday hit a bus and several cars in Tel Aviv, killing a 40-year-old man in what police said was a suspected terror attack.
Police said the truck struck vehicles for two kilometers from the Mesubim Junction along Bar Lev Street in Hatikva neighborhood in Tel Aviv. The man who was killed was apparently sitting in his car when he was hit by the truck.
Police Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld speaking at the scene of the truck rampage, said "Based on the level of destruction, and the number of people who have been injured and one person killed, it looks as if this was deliberate, but the investigation is still ongoing."
MDA said the number of injured at 17, with one in moderate condition, and the rest lightly wounded.
The wounded were taken to Tel Hashomer Medical Center.
The driver was arrested and was being questioned at the Iftach Police Station in Tel Aviv. He claimed during the interrogation that it was an accident, and that he had a punctured tire, but police are doubting his claims.
The 22-year-old driver is a resident of the Arab village of Kfar Kassem.
Witnesses said they heard the driver screaming during the incident.
"We heard terrible slamming behind us in the car — boom, and another boom and another boom — until it reached us, and we simply flew up in the air," a witness, identified only as Yossi, said on Army Radio.
"He went on and crashed into a bus. He got out and began to go crazy, throwing things at people. There was this poor innocent girl — he struck her on the head. She just fell down, and now people are treating her. What can I tell you? A terrorist attack."
Police officers were stationed throughout the country on Sunday in cities with Arab and Jewish populations and areas where conflict is expected in light of ‘Nakba Day’.
The Tel Hashomer Medical Center has opened an information hotline for casualties of the truck rampage. The hotline can be accessed at 1255131. The Ichilov Medical Center information hotline can be accessed at 1255133.
