The spokesman of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Arye Mekel, said that "Latin America, like all the countries in the world, has to join the effort not to allow Iran to produce nuclear weapons."
In a dialogue with Argentina’s Jewish News Agency (AJN), Mekel referred to the tour of Iranian Vice President Samareh Hashemi through Bolivia, and claimed that Israel "does not follow the trips" of Iranian officials.
In his visit to the Andean country, Hashemi said that Tehran is determined to give technical assistance to Bolivia for the installation of an oil refinery and to carry out hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation works.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s envoy also congratulated President Evo Morales for his victory in the referendum that ratified him as Bolivia’s President last Sunday.
Asked about the influence of Iran in the region, Mekel stated that "Latin America, as all the countries, knows that Iran is trying to produce nuclear weapons and that it is a danger for all the nations."
In that sense, he noted that "the United Nations Security Council has already imposed sanctions on Iran."
